Car insurance is increasing each year and as a result new and young drivers are more selective in the car they choose to buy, if any at all. New and young drivers are even more wary of cars because of the lack of no claims bonuses and the chance of them having a road traffic collision are higher, so the power and safety of the car is ever so important.
Insurance companies clasify and differentiate cars by the different car insurance groups, from 1 - 20. The system is pretty simple to understand, cars are catergorised from 1 - 20. This is just based on the engine size or how expensive the car is, they also look at how rare the parts to fix the car are to get hold of.
Please see below a list of cars that are the cheapest to insure for new and young drivers (Nov 2011):
Ford KA2 - Yearly insurance cost: £1,651.40 / Monthly insurance cost: 137.62
Ford KA - Yearly insurance cost: £1,781.25 / Monthly insurance cost: £148.44
Peugeot 107 - Yearly insurance cost: £1,994.42 / Monthly insurance cost: £166.20
Daewoo Matiz - Yearly insurance cost: £2,258.26 / Monthly insurance cost: £188.19
Mini One - Yearly insurance cost: £2,268.85 / Monthly insurance cost: £189.07
Other cars from the lower insurance groups (1,2 & 3).
Ford Fiesta - Some Ford Fiesta's fall into the group 1 category, although a more high-spec one can get up to group 6, like the zetec for example. The Fiesta is a long-term popular car amongst young drivers and parts are amongst the most readily accessible of any vehicle.
Vauxhall Corsa - The basic one-litre Corsa falls into the group 1 category and slowly rise up the groups as the engine gets bigger. Insurers like it because it is safe and cheap to fix.
Peugeot 206 - The lowest group the 206 falls into is group 2, but they can go up much higher depending on the performance. Stick with a lower range one and the insurance should be relatively cheap. It's another firm bargain driver favourite.
Renault Clio - The lowest group of a Renault Clio falls into is group 2, and again can steadily rise depending on the specification. If you want a cheap insurance car it fits the bill, just avoid the suped-up ones like the dynamique or billabong models.
Fiat Punto - Newer Punto's fall into the group 3 category and are again popular amongst newer drivers. The older shape second hand cars were hugely popular and their ubiquity is reflected in cheap insurance.
Other group 1 cars include:
- Citroën C1, C2 and C3
- Skoda Fabia
- Suzuki Alto
- Toyota Aygo
- Toyota Yaris
- Vauxhall Agila
- Smart Fortwo Coupe
