This is a real grey area and some say it SHOULD be your age x 2 + 2! Work that out, what you reckon? It will be different for each individual.
There are many factors that need to be taken into account on how many driving lessons it will take you to reach test standard. Learning to drive is expensive so picking the right driving instructor or driving school is important, see our article on how to pick a good driving instructor. In most cases, it should take around 30 to 40 hours of professional driving tuition to reach practical driving test standard.
No driving lessons are officially required before taking the theory test, however, revision and extensive practice on the road signs is strongly advised. Please note: Really soon, the DSA will stop publishing the theory test questions before the examination. However, you will find, that taking driving lessons will help you in passing the theory test. During the lessons, you will gain an understanding of road signs and markings even more. Driving lessons will also help significantly with the hazard perception part of the theory test, see our TV page for more videos around the hazard perception test and theory videos here.
Many driving schools offer an assessment lesson, but MANY don't. This is to give the instructor an overall indication on your ability and to see whether your ready to take the practical driving test. The instructor will then provide you with the amount of hours he or she thinks you will need to reach pratical test standard. Some driving schools offer this assessment lesson at a discounted price and on some occasions even free of charge, this will separate the genuine schools from the others.
As with any business, positive reviews are a good indication of their service. Ask friends who have passed the driving test what school or instructor they used and ask their opinion on them.
After getting feedback from your tutor, friends and family members you can decide the requirement of driving lessons.
