On the day of practical driving test, you will be taken to the test centre, by in most cases your driving instructor. You will be assess by a DSA examiner. Before starting the practical driving test, you will be asked to read a number plate at a specified distance, this will test your eye sight and whether you are able to drive.
In addition, you will also be asked 2 questions about maintenance and controls of the vehicle.
The practical driving test itself will last approximately 35 - 40 minutes and you will asked to perform a number of manoeuvres which include the following.
- Bay Parking
- Parallel Parking
- Reversing around a corner
- Turning in a road
- Emergency Stop
Your driving ability will also be tested:
- Traffic Lights
- Roundabouts
- Junctions
- Hill starts
At the end of your practical driving test, you will notified by your examiner if you have passed or failed and given a debrief. In order to pass, you must not make any serious or dangerous faults and no more than 15 minor faults. Your examiner will give you a check list which will identify any minor or serious faults incurred during your practical driving test. In the event of a failure, this will help to assist your instructor identify the areas which require further intuition.
If you are unfortunate to fail your practical driving test, you will be required to wait a further 10 days before taking a retest.
Instead of this, there are few updates in the UK driving test. The new driving test has two major changes from the 'old' / previous practical test.
The first change is that you are only be required to carry out ONE driving manoeuvre instead of the previous requirement for two manoeuvres. This is to allow more time for the new Independent Driving part of the test which is the 2nd and most significant change.
The independent drive of the test lasts about 10 minutes.
The candidate will be asked to do ONE of the following, either:
- Drive to a destination following traffic signs.
- Drive following a series of verbal directions - Diagrams will be shown to candidates given verbal directions.
- Drive using a combination of both of the above methods.
