Being involved in a road traffic collision

  • PDF

If you are a new or young driver or even a driver with experience and you've stumbled upon this article, there are many things that usually cannot be avoided and some amongst them are accidents or road traffic collisions.

Try to stay calm. Panic can make others panic and the situation worse. There needs to be a calm person to determine the extent of damage and to determine if there are any injuries that need immediate medical attention. The first thing to do after a collision is to immediately stop the car. Switch off the car engine and switch on the hazard warning light to alert other car drivers driving towards the accident scene. Check if any of the occupants are injured. If the injuries are serious, call for immediate medical help.
File an car accident report as soon as possible and call 999for emergency help and only discuss the accident with the police officer so they can understand the seriousness. In some real extreme instances, you may not be able to call 999 so stay calm and wait for help to come.

If you are able to walk away from the accident, call your insurance company straight away. Sometimes the police officer can give your insurance company more accurate information rather than information you may not be recording properly because you are upset by the accident. This can save you a lot of time later waiting for your claim to be processed.

If you are in a perfect condition then it is good to write down the complete information of the accident scene. The information includes time and place of collision, weather and road conditions and the complete personal information of those involved. Also, take as many pictures neccessary.  Personal information includes name, address, telephone details, driver’s license number, vehicle details and car insurance details. If there are other vehicles involved in the accident, mention the vehicle’s make, model, variant, colours and license plate number. This will help to prevent you from any kind of legal hassles. The police will also witness all of this.
