Even the safest and most cautious drivers can be involved in tragic vehicular collisions (accidents). Every year the poor decisions and recklessness of a few unsafe drivers puts innocent people in harm's way. By knowing what the most common reckless driver actions are, and by keeping a few safety tips in mind, you can better protect yourself and your passengers when on the road.

There are many actions an unsafe driver can take to endanger themselves and anyone else they share the road with. Some of the most common forms of reckless and unsafe driving include the following:

  • Driving without proper lighting
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Operating a vehicle while eating, drinking, or talking on a mobile phone
  • Driving while distracted
  • Tailgating
  • Speeding
  • Swerving between lanes

Any of these actions can significantly endanger the well-being of innocent pedestrians, drivers, and passengers on a road.

If you do find yourself sharing the road with an unsafe and reckless driver who is performing any of the above actions, there are some steps you can take to avoid being harmed by the negligent party. These include the following:

  • Significantly increase your following distance
  • If necessary, pull over to the side of the road or exit the motorway or A road to avoid to driver (when safe to do so)
  • If a driver is tailgating you, pull over when possible to let them pass
  • If you spot a drunk driver endangering the road, increase your distance and call the police
  • Never attempt to follow or interact with an unsafe driver

These steps will help you avoid interaction with an unsafe driver, decreasing the chance that the negligence of someone else will cause you and those you love pain.

Stay safe everyone!
